Recycled crushed concrete

The mistake is expecting a freely draining stone to do the same job as a compacted base. Crushed Concrete includes angular recycled concrete pieces along with fines, and that blend is meant to tighten under compaction. It works below driveways, barn pads, and equipment areas where the surface needs support rather than a loose stone bed.

Ohio freeze and thaw can expose weak preparation, particularly where lake-plain clay holds water. Keep water from being held beneath the finished surface, and compact the material after light moisture is added. Smaller particles work into the voids between the larger fragments while the angular faces engage, producing a firm course for traffic. For French drains, pipe bedding, or a clean stone bed, reserve a washed, open-graded material for that purpose.

Common Uses

Driveway & Parking Pad Base

For new or rebuilt driveways and parking areas, crushed concrete makes a solid base layer. Install and compact it in lifts to support traffic, limit ruts and potholes, and create a surface that can stay exposed or receive driveway gravel on top for a neater look.

Road Base & Access Roads

Build private-road bases, farm lanes, machinery areas, and jobsite entryways with crushed concrete. The compacted surface carries heavy trucks and equipment and remains usable in wet weather after rain.

Sub-Base for Patios, Walkways & Pads

Place compacted crushed concrete below pavers, paths, sheds, and hot tub pads to distribute weight and help the finish remain level. Its larger particles pass water more easily than native clay, which can reduce water held below the surface. Add a bedding course of sand or screenings before setting pavers.

Fill & Backfill

For low-area fill, grade buildup, and backfill at retaining walls or footings, crushed concrete provides an economical structural option. Its sharp-edged particles form a firm compacted layer instead of washing out or becoming muddy like soil fill can.

Why Choose Crushed Concrete

Lower Cost Than Quarried Base

Since it is recycled material, crushed concrete generally has a lower per-ton cost than crushed stone base. At every order size, ours costs less than our driveway gravel, which can reduce material expense for long driveways and site lanes.

Compacts Hard and Stays Put

Run a plate compactor or roller over the angular concrete and fines to lock the material together. Remaining cement paste can aid binding as the base settles, producing a dense layer that helps resist ruts, shifting, and washouts.

Recycled and Responsible

Crushed concrete puts existing concrete back to use instead of sending it to a landfill, reducing demand for newly quarried stone. It provides the support needed below driveways and roads.

Versatile Base and Fill

Crushed concrete can cover general fill, driveway and parking-pad foundations, road base, and sub-base beneath patios or sheds. A single delivery can supply much of the early ground prep for one project.
